Counselor of the Day: Sarah Schmidt

Today's counselor is Sarah Schmidt. Sarah just graduated from the University of Virginia with Bachelor's in English, and is currently working on her Master's in teaching.

Sarah is a counselor in the 9-11 camp for rising 11th graders.

How long have you been with SEP?

This is my second year here.

What made you want to come back to SEP?

I came back to SEP because of the campers and the friends I have made while working here. It's really great to see just how excited the kids are when they arrive. Many of them have been coming for years and keep coming back because of the social experience. It feels great to know that the role I play as a counselor helps make their experience at SEP special.

What's your special topic?

My special topic is slam poetry. We are going to examine slam poetry performances to determine how their voice and delivery affect our emotions. Campers will then have the opportunity to write and perform their own slam poetry, trying out their own voices.

What's your favorite part of camp, and why?

I think my favorite part of camp has to be the dance. As counselors, it's fun for us to dress up in crazy costumes and dance around, but it also marks the last night of the session. We get to reminisce about all of the great moments of camp when we watch the slide show.

What's your hall theme?

My hall's theme is The Great Gatsby. For my door, I recreated the cover of the novel. On each of the campers' doors I made a daisy flower to represent the character Daisy.

Do you prefer eating at O-Hill or St. Anne's?

St. Anne's wins hands-down. STAB tends to have healthier, higher quality food for us during the summer. They try to buy local produce and even compost. Nothing like being environmentally friendly.

What's something about you that someone might not expect if they didn't know you well?

I really like Sci-Fi. While I'm not well-versed in everything Sci-Fi, I'm a huge fan of Firefly and everything Joss Whedon. I even have future plans to watch Battlestar Gallactica.

When you first started working here, what's something that surprised you?

When I first started working here I was amazed at the number of campers who have been attending for years and how many of them were already close friends despite the distance between them. I think it shows how great this camp is. It provides students with an opportunity to meet others who are just like them. Most of us don't get this experience until we get to college.

What's a funny story that's happened at camp so far?

On the first day of the first session of the summer, two of my campers from last year ran up to me in the dining hall and almost tackled me with a hug. They hugged me at the same time so hard I almost fell over.

What do you think is the most difficult part of the job?

I think that the hardest part of my job is having to say goodbye to the campers, especially the ones for which it is their last year here at SEP. Over the twelve days you have them, you get really attached to them and it's really hard to see them leave.

What do you think about gifted education?

Because I am working on my Masters in Teaching, I know a little bit about Gifted Education. Gifted education provides students who excel in standard classroom environments opportunities to challenge themselves intellectually. I think that gifted education pushes these students to excel to their highest abilities. Like Special Education programs, Gifted Education programs provide these unique students with the appropriate challenges they need in order to succeed.
