Counselor of the Day: Marian McCullough

Today's counselor is Marian McCullough. Marian is a rising third year at the University of Virginia, studying history and elementary education.

Marian is a counselor in 9-11 for 10th grade girls.

How long have you been with SEP?

I've been a counselor at SEP for two years.

What made you want to come back to SEP?

I think that the great people on the counseling staff every year and the amazing experience of SEP itself made me want to come back.

What's your special topic?

I'm teaching a special topic called "Shake It, Don't Break It". It's basically a class that studies how certain dances, like the the cha cha slide, have become forms of social expression in American culture. We'll be studying how different dances have been used in American culture and how their cultural connotation has changed over time. We'll also learn a few of the dances!

What's your favorite part of camp, and why?

My favorite part of the camp is the dance on the last night of camp, hands down. It's just so great seeing all of the kids get really excited and interacting with each other; also, I really enjoy seeing what dance moves they come up with.

What's your hall theme?

My theme is "Despicable Me", like the movie. All of my name tags for my campers are minions (the little yellow henchmen people) that say "Welcome!" on them. I'm really excited about them, because its probably my most successful theme so far.

Do you prefer eating at O-Hill or St. Anne's?

St. Anne's. As a UVA student, I go to O-Hill a lot during the school year, so I think I'd pick St. Anne's just because its a welcome change of scenery. Also, the food in St. Anne's is really good.

What's something about you someone might no expect if they didn't know you well?

I absolutely cannot cook. I can bake some things, but cooking is my Achilles' heel.

When you first started working here, what's something that surprised you?

When I first started working here, I was really surprised by how much all of the counselors thoroughly enjoyed their job; on all of staff, I don't think I've found anyone that didn't want to be at SEP.

What's a funny story that's happened so far at camp?

During camp, we play a game called the "Schaffer Game" and in this game, campers go around to different parts of the dorm and do different things to get letters to spell out words. One of the things that they have to do is impress two counselors, and they come up with the funniest things to do. During the "impress me" section, a camper walked up to us, took a sip of water and sprayed it out of her mouth like walrus fangs. It was hilarious.

What do you think is the most difficult part of the job?

I think the most difficult part of the job is using the breaks that you have wisely. At the beginning of camp, you always want to give 110 percent of your energy--even during breaks. But after a while, you realize that you still need to have energy for the rest of the day, so managing your time wisely becomes difficult.

What do you know about gifted education?

I think it is very important.
