Counselor of the Day: Brielle Welch

Today's counselor is Brielle Welch. Brielle is a rising Sophomore at William and Mary College, studying elementary education and africana studies.

Brielle is a counselor in 9-11 for tenth grade girls.

How long have you been with SEP?

This is my first year working here.

What made you want to be an SEP counselor?

I wanted to work at SEP because as a camper I really loved the environment. SEP was an extremely important part of my childhood and I wanted to make this experience memorable for other children.

What's your special topic?

My special topic is called "A Timeless Classic." It's a music exploration class in which students get to explore what makes a song stand the test of time and hold on to its relevance. The students look at songs and artists in both the pop and rock genres and then based on what they've learned they get to compile a CD full of what they think the future timeless classics will be.

What's your favorite part of camp, and why?

My favorite part of camp is definitely the dance. It's a great way to send the kids off and it was my favorite activity as a camper.

What's your hall theme?

My hall theme is Superwomen: Reality Edition. Each girl has a category on their door--athlete, entertainer, activist, and artist--and a famous quote from a powerful women in that category.

Do you have a favorite memory from being a camper?

Summer of 2009 was a great year at camp. I can't bring a specific memory to mind but I can say that that summer created lasting relationships...one of the campers I met that year is actually a fellow counselor!

Do you prefer eating at O-Hill or St. Anne's?

St. Anne's, they have surprisingly good food for a high school.

What's something about you someone might not expect if they didn't know you well?

I got my black belt in Tae Kwon Do when I was 14.

What's something that surprised you when you first started working here?

It was pretty cool to see how the camp worked from the inside. I got to know the ins and outs and see what SEP really does for the kids.

Can you tell us a funny story that's happened at camp so far?

After approximately 3 hours of camp, my girls had already taken to calling themselves the Briettes. I felt like I had a little army.

What do you think is the most difficult part of the job?

I think establishing solid control over a suite can be pretty difficult. Especially when you have campers who are not as cooperative as you'd like.

What do you think about gifted education?

Gifted education is very interesting. These kids are so intelligent and I'm constantly impressed how much they know and how much they want to learn. They have a constant desire to do their best. There's nothing like these kids' ambition.
