Counselor of the Day: Michael Harvey

Today's counselor is Michael Harvey. Michael is a rising Senior at James Madison University, studying international affairs and geographic science.

Michael is a counselor in 5-8 for 7th and 8th grade boys.

How long have you been with SEP?

This is my first summer here.

Why did you want to be a counselor?

I wanted to work here because I heard it was such a fun and rewarding job.

What's your special topic?

My special topic is called "Build-A-World". Campers will have the chance to team up with a partner and create their own country on a new planet that was discovered in our galaxy. They choose its name, design its flag, and then run simulations that are similar to that of a Model United Nations.

What's your favorite part of camp, and why?

My favorite part of camp is definitely rec time. The kids are inside all day in class so it's always a lot of fun whenever we have the chance to be outside playing games with them.

What's your hall theme?

My hall theme is Boston sports teams. Each door has the logo of one of the four major sports teams from Boston: Red Sox, Bruins, Patriots, and Celtics.

Do you prefer eating at O-Hill or St. Anne's?

I prefer to eat at St. Anne's because I think the food there is healthier and is prepared just for us.

What's something about you someone might not expect if they didn't know you well?

I still enjoy playing the PokeMon games for Gameboy.

When you first started working here, what's something that surprised you?

How nice the campers are and how awesome the staff is.

Can you tell us a funny story from camp?

At dinner, one of my boys decided to wink and smile at every girl that made eye contact with him...their reactions were priceless.

What do you think is the most difficult part of the job?

I think the most difficult part about this job is making sure I am getting the campers to their scheduled activities on time. Some kids tend to walk slower than others...

What do you think about gifted education?

Unfortunately, I don't know much about it. We don't have programs like that at our schools back home in Massachusetts.
